The Name Argentina
It comes from the Latin “argentum” which means money. The origins of
this denomination takes us to the first journeys made by the first
Spanish conquers to the Plate River. The sinkers of Juan Díaz de
Solis’ expedition found natives in this area. They gave the sinkers
silver objects. In the year 1524, these people informed Spain about
the existence of “The Silver Mountain,” which was rich in precious
silver. From that date onwards, Portuguese people called Solis River
in a different way: It was “Silver River”. Two years later, Spanish
people also used this denomination. The National Constitution,
sanctioned in 1853, included the name of “Argentinean Republic”
among the official names for the designation of both the government
and the territory of the Nation. |
